Fishing Report Sept 30, 2013

It’s Monday, the last day of Sept 2013 under cloudy skies with a slight chance of rain; winds are N 10-15, expected high of 75 degrees with sunset at 6:49pm and sunrise tomorrow is 6:57am.
First tide is high at 4:26am, low at 10:32 am
Second tide is high at 4:40pm and low is 11:12pm

Calling around to the piers, it’s a rough sea, the water is murky and 70 degrees.  Channel bass, aka “old drum” are the main topic on the planks.  Anglers with their heavers are slinging ” 8 and bait ” ( 8 ounces of lead with a candy bar sized chunk of fresh fish ) off the end of one of the local piers then waiting for the pick-up.  A reel starts to sing, the rod owner hardens up the drag, sets the hook and the dance begins.  It could be a shark or a ray, but they’re hoping for a big drum.  If it doesn’t break them off, the fish is worked into a waiting pier net and raised onto the pier deck.  Photos are taken for posterity and the fish is unceremoniously thrown back in the drink, hopefully to do it again another time.  This is a drum day, windy, rough, murky, generally snotty, those fish like these conditions.  If you have a decent spot you can fish the surf today, maybe you can hang some nice sea mullet or a puppy drum.  Sand fleas and fresh mullet would be my baits of choice.

Winds are going to start laying down today, come in and pick out some fresh finger mullet and Take a Kid Fishing.

Fishing Report September 29th

For Sunday, Sept 29th, it’s still a little breezy out there but the wind is starting to drop out. High expected around 75 degrees, partly cloudy skies with less than 20% chance of rain. Sunset is 6:49 pm, sunrise tomorrow at 6:57 am. First tide is low at  9:36am am, high at 3:51pm pm Second tide is low at 10:32 pm

All the piers are telling me the ocean is rough and dirty and the water temp is about 70 degrees. Several large red drum have been caught and released from the pier ends. Bluefish, Spot and Crocker have been reported also. Conditions for surf fishing have been challenging at best with no reports yet.

Been out of town the last few days, consequently the fish report has been unavailable, but I’m back now and I’ll try to be more diligent. As always, Take a Kid Fishing. Coolbreeze out

Fishing Report Sept 24, 2013

Tuesday Sept 24th is going to be one of those special days.  The wind is light out of the north at less than 10 mph with mostly sunny skies and a 0 % chance of rain.  The expected high will be 69 degrees with a sea water temp at a warm 72.  Sunset is 6:58 pm with sunrise tomorrow at 6:52 am.
First tide is low at 5:03 am and high is 11:19 pm
Second tide is low at 6:00 pm and high is 11:39 pm

There have been some big red drum caught from the piers during that blow we had – jennettes had 5 yesterday.  Sea mullet ,nice ones, and several slot sized puppy drum have been taken also from the surf.  Chatting with Avalon pier this morning the staff saw a couple specks being carried off the beach north of the pier – is the trout run starting?  Shorter days, northeast winds and cooler temps are sending messages to the baitfish, puppy drum and speckled trout that it’s time to start heading south (running the gauntlet we call the Outer Banks).

No boat report – the boats didn’t make it out yesterday.

Should have some more fresh finger mullet tomorrow.  Be a hero, take a kid fishing!!!

Fishing Report Sept 23 2013

O K, in addition to officially being fall, it really felt like fall as I came to work this morning, overcast skies, N winds 15 – 25, cool temps (too early for a frost).  I was comfortable in my hoodie and long trousers.  Alright, I’m pushing it a little – the sun is breaking out as I type this post, it’s not going to be miserable today.  Do expect mostly sunny skies with a high around 71 degrees and 0 % chance of rain.  Sunset is 7:00 pm and sunrise is tomorrow at 6:51 am
First tide is low at 4:21 am and high is 10:34 am
Second tide is low at 5:12 pm and high is 10:53 pm

Calling around to the piers, things are a little slow this morning.  There are a couple drum fishermen testing the waters but not much action so far.  Water is clean but rough with temps reported between 70 – 74 degrees.  The current along the beach is strong making it challenging for surf fishing – south beach on Hatteras would be a better choice if you really wanted to go surf fishing.
The little bridge didn’t report much activity either – not many anglers, not much catching.

Too rough for the boats – no one went out, maybe tomorrow.

Come on in, we got lots of new long sleeved Salt Life and Calcutta tees.

Fishing Report Sept 22 2013

For Sunday Sept 22 2013, it is definitely a different day.  Today is the autumnal equinox, the first day of fall (officially sometime this afternoon).  Last nights showers will probably continue through midday yielding to partly cloudy skies with a high of 76 degrees.  South winds at less than 10 mph will shift to NNE increasing to 15-20 mph as the edge of this front passes over  early this afternoon.  Sunset is 7:04 pm and sunrise tomorrow is 6:50 am
First tide is low at 3:39 am, high is 9:51 am
Second tide is low at 4:25 pm and high at 10:05 pm

The weather is putting a damper on fishing action this morning.  Checking with the piers fishermen are in the single digits but it tends to be a slow start on sundays anyway.  Sea water temp at the Duck pier is 73 degrees.  Am expecting some more puppy drum and sea mullet to show up in the surf – sand fleas should be the first bait of choice.  Here’s hoping this weather starts chasing some fish out of the Chesapeake Bay.
