The forecast for Saturday Nov 30th calls for a high of 52 under sunny skies with a 0% chance of rain. Winds will be NE 10- 15 mph, sunset will be at 4:49 pm and sunrise tomorrow will be at 6:53 am.
First tide is a high at 4:30 am with a low at 10:59 am
Second tide is high at 4:44 pm with a low at 10:57 pm

It’s the beginning of the end of another holiday weekend and it’s a busy one.  Red drum is the fish of the day again and that is  a good thing cause today is Jennettes Pier annual Redfish Tournament.  They have about 50 anglers signed up this morning – cruise on over and check them out.  Jennettes pier will be open all winter, however it’s the last day of the season for Avalon and the Outer Banks piers – it’s also the last day for Fishheads Bar and Grill at the OBX pier – they will all re-open next spring.

There are some forecasters calling for a bitterly cold winter and half of me would like to see it happen.  It would increase the likelihood of striped bass leaving the bay and coming south, but the tossup is whether the fish will stay inside of 3 miles or not.  As much as I would prefer another mild winter, it has been a long while since there has been a good rockfish run around the old sandbar.

Fishing Report Nov 26th 2013

For Tuesday Nov 26th, the forecast calls for cloudy skies and an 80% chance of rain, SE winds 15 – 25 mph, high temp in the mid 60’s.  Sunset will be at 4:50 pm and sunrise tomorrow will be at 6:50 pm.
First tide is high at 1:02 am with a low at 7:10 am
Second tide is high at 1:06 pm and low at 7:37 pm

Conditions are good this morning with clean water, 2 – 3 ft waves, ocean temps in the low to mid 50’s.  The first report I had this morning was slot size red drums and a few keeper speckled trout were being hooked from the beach north of Avalon pier.  All the piers said the puppy drum bite was on again.

Avalon and Outer Banks piers are closing for the season on Saturday Nov 30th.  Nags Head pier will shut down Sunday Nov 31st.  Jennettes pier will remain open all winter.

Fishing Report Nov 25th 2013

For Monday Nov 25th, the expected high will be around 44 degrees with partly cloudy skies and 0% chance of rain.  Wind will start out N shifting to SE 10 -15 mph.  Sunset is 4:51 pm and sunrise tomorrow is 6:49 pm.
First tide is high at 12:07 am with a low at 6:11 am
Second tide is high at 12:13 pm and low at 6:48 pm

Driving to work this morning I noticed the ice on some areas of Kitty Hawk Bay so it had to be a bit more than chilly last nite.  Calling around to the piers, Outer banks pier was the hot spot with several slot puppy drum hooked this morning.  Sea water temp is posted as 50 – 51 degrees.  Tuesday and Wednesday are supposed to be in the 60s but with a significant chance of rain.  Thanksgiving is typically a popular holiday on the OBX so I’m hoping we don’t get weathered out on the weekend.  Not trying to date myself but I can remember surf fishermen coming here for the holiday to chase schools of large bluefish blitzing the beaches.  Not holding my breath but wouldn’t that be something to be thankful for!

Well, like the weather, the drum bite has cooled down a lot from earlier this week.  Piers and beaches had little to report this morning.  Temps are dropping tonight and the breeze is building – that should chase some more fishes out of Virginia down our way – we can only hope.

Offshore fleet stayed at the docks today – probably tomorrow also.

Fishing Report Nov 22nd 2013

For  Friday Nov 22nd, warmer today, high around 68 degrees mostly cloudy skies, wind south shifting to southwest 10 – 15 and a 0% chance of rain.  Sunset is 4:52 pm and sunrise tomorrow at 6:46 am
First tide is low at 3:42 am with a high at 9:55 am
Second tide is low at 4:33 pm with a high at 10:27 pm

Not sure what the ocean temp is cause we’re getting different readings – we’ll just call it at 55 degrees.  Not hearing a lot  of  puppy drum, mostly small specks although I did weigh a 5.54# spec caught by Jim Soles north of Avalon pier. I did hear that the offshore boats did go out.

Tuesday Nov 19th, same sandbar, different day.  Expect a high around 54 degrees under mostly sunny skies with a 0% chance of rain today.  Sunset is 4:53 pm, sunrise tomorrow is 6:43 am.  Winds are N at 20 – 30 mph.
First tide is low at 1:41 am with a high at 7:58am
Second tide is low at 2:38 pm and high at 8:19 pm

This northerly breeze is expected to stay with us for a couple days at least.  Yesterday was very productive on the piers and especially the beaches with lots of slot sized puppy drum and some keeper speckled trout in the mix.  Today’s weather calls for a different approach, “plan B” if you will.  A strong north wind means a strong current along the ocean shore with dirty water for sure.  Throwing lures in the surf today would be a little too challenging.  If 8 and bait won’t hold bottom inside of the first 30 yds maybe we need to think about fishing somewhere else.
Oregon inlet – the jetty, the catwalks, Bodie light, propeller slough, Green island slough first come to mind.
Sounds – Kitty Hawk Bay, Colington Island, little bridge, the pier under the west side of the Pirates Cove bridge, west end of Wright Memorial Bridge, back side of Jockeys ridge, the pier at the west end of old Manns Harbor bridge.
Hatteras Island – Pea Island, New Inlet, old channel at Kinnakeet Station, Canadian Hole, south beach (Cape Point to Hatteras Inlet).  lots of other honey holes to be sure.

Today is looking to be seasonably mild with a high in the mid 70s under partly sunny skies.  Slim chance of rain and light SW winds switching to NW 10 – 15 later.  Sunset at 4:54 pm, sunrise tomorrow at 6:42 am.
First tide is a low at 1:03 am with a high at 7:21 am
Second tide is low at 2:02 pm and high at 7:40 pm

Monday Nov 18th may be a sequel to an awesome weekend for the number of puppy drum that were hooked on the beaches and piers of the outer banks.  The hole north of Avalon Pier was productive this morning – one customer buying Berkley gulps described the action as “fish every cast!”  Trout catches have been mostly under sized with the occasional keeper – as the weather gets more seasonal I expect to see larger specks on the stringers.  Expect some of that seasonal weather to show up tomorrow through the rest of the week.  Ocean temps are reported along the beach at around 58 degrees.  Brrrrrr!

The big boys who made it out through yesterday’s fog came back with more yellowfin tuna and mahi-mahi.

It’s Sunday Nov 17th.  The forecast is for a high of 69 degrees under mostly cloudy skies with a 0% chance of rain.  Wind will be light easterly shifting to south 10 -15 later.  Sunset is 4:55 pm and sunrise tomorrow is 6:41 am
First tide is low at 12:24 am with a high at 6 :43 pm
Second tide is low at 1:22 pm with a high at 7:01 pm

Yesterday was epic for “year 2011 class red drum” being caught on the northern outer banks.  Buxton jetties, Cape Point and Hatteras Inlet according to Red Drum Tackle has been off the hook surf fishing the last couple days.   Avalon reported keeper speckled trout during the early bite this morning.  Oregon Inlet beaches have been blistering red drum.  A customer this morning told me about catching a citation spec in his cast net.  Remember, possession for red drum is 1 fish between 18 – 27 inches per/day per/person. A speckled trout limit is 4 per/day, greater than 14 inches  (lets be real, a 14″ trout is a small trout).  Anyone need eels, we got lots of nice eels.
