Fishing Report Jan 28th 2014

It’s 29 degrees as I post this and that will probably be today’s high.  Winds are N 20 – 30, the forecast calls for a 90% chance of snow later with an accumulation of 1-2 inches with more tonight and tomorrow, heavy at times.  Todays sunset at 5:24 PM likely will not be visable and neither will tomorrow’s sunrise at 7:06 AM.
First tide is a high at 4:37 AM followed with a low at 11:10 AM
Second tide is high at 4:57 PM with the low at 11:13 PM

I seriously do not expect anyone to attempt fishing on the northern beaches for the next couple days.  That being said, the report from Hatteras Island is that several puppy drum and black drum were caught Monday afternoon on the south side of Cape Hatteras.  Day old satellite imagery show warm water eddies at cape point.  There are folks talking about fishing the point tonight for drum during the snowstorm.  If you live down there, I’d say knock yourself out – if you live on the northern beaches, you might want to re think that option.

This is the short version – conditions on the sandbar are going to be horrendous the next couple of days!!!  Expect freezing temps, high winds, icy roads with 4 – 8 inches of snow.  As long as we don’t lose power, we should be all right.  Just hunker down and don’t try anything foolish like with indoor grills or generators or whatever.

Stay safe, stay warm, good luck.    Coolbreeze out

Fishing Report Jan 27th 2014

Monday Jan 27th is calling for mostly cloudy skies, 0% chance of rain and a high of 53 degrees.  Winds will be SW 10 – 20, sunset will be at 5:23 PM and sunrise tomorrow will be at 7:07 PM.
First tide is a high at 3:37 AM followed with a low at 10:11 AM
Second tide is a high at 3:55 PM with a low at 10:13 PM

Yesterday Jennettes pier posted the water temp at 47 degrees and reported anglers catching spiny dogfish.  Sat/imagery showed the water temp around cape point at 61 degrees and Red Drum tackle reported speckled trout and puppy drum from the beaches.  When you can get a 15 degree increase in sea water temp with a one hour drive, it’s probably worth your time, weather permitting.

Tomorrow is a different day – the expected high Tuesday will be around 27 degrees, northerly winds 22 – 29 mph and snow likely after 1 PM possibly heavy at times, continuing into early Wednesday afternoon.  Hope for the best, prepare for the worst.

Stay warm,   Coolbreeze out

Fishing Report Jan 24th 2013

Friday Jan 24th is expected to be partly cloudy, winds NW 15 – 25 with the high in the low 20s.  Sunset will be at 5:20 PM and sunrise tomorrow will be at 7:09 AM.
First tide is high at 12:32 am followed with the low at 6:56 AM
Second tide is high at 12:42 PM with the next low at 7:07 PM

When I came into work this morning the air temperature was posted at 19 degrees.  The brisk NW wind got me thinking someone would need to be seriously motivated to go fishing in these conditions.  What about those commercial guys on “The Deadliest Catch” t v show – even the filming crew is risking their safety to roll tape.  I feel like a wuss bitching about a measly 19 degrees.

Red Drum Tackle reported lots of puppy drum were hooked between Buxton jetties and cape point on Thursday.  No word on any catches on the northern beaches.  Jennettes Pier posted the water temp at 42.  Duck pier posted it at 41 degrees.

Stay warm,    Coolbreeze out

Fishing Report Jan 21st 2013

It’s sunny, mid 50s, kind of nice out, but don’t get used to it.  Wind are ENE now but will shift to WNW this afternoon and start blowing like stink as the temperatures start to drop like a rock, falling into the low 20’s overnight.  Rain possible today likely turning to SNOW tonight.  Sunset at 5:17 PM, sunrise tomorrow at 7:10 AM.
First tide is low at 4:16 am followed with a high at 10:14 AM
Second tide is a low at 4:40 PM and a high at 10:50 PM

Oregon Inlet is the hot spot on the northern beaches with some catches of  puppy drum reported – skates and dogfish elsewhere with not many folks trying to fish.  Buxton jetties to cape point slot sized drum were caught yesterday according to Red Drum Tackle.  With the weather forecasts for the next couple days, I don’t expect there will be much to report fishing-wise.

Stay warm,  Coolbreeze out

Fishing Report Jan 19th 2014

It’s Sunday Jan 19th.  The forecast calls for sunny skies but its still kind of cloudy out as I post this.  The expected high is around 49 with SW winds at 15 – 20.  The water temp is still dropping at 47 degrees.   Sunset today is 5:16 PM with tomorrows sunrise listed at 7:10 AM.
First tide is low at 2:53 AM followed with a high at8:58 AM
Second tide is low at 3:26 PM with the high at 9:27 PM

The beaches around Oregon Inlet are still holding puppy drum ( along with skates and doggies ).  Air temps are expected to drop significantly Tuesday night, I expect the catching to drop out also.

STAY WARM,  Coolbreeze out

Fishung Report Jan 18th 2014

For Sat, Jan 18th, it’s in the low 40s but feels colder cause of the brisk west winds gusting to 25 MPH.  Enjoy it now cause it will get chillier next week.  0% chance of rain today, sunset is 5:15 PM and tomorrows sunrise is 7:12 AM.
First tide is low at 2:15 AM followed with a high at 8:24 AM
Second tide is low at 2:53 PM with the high at 8:49 PM

Still hearing some puppy drum being landed around Oregon Inlet and points south.  Right now I’m hearing the water temp in the surf is about 48 degrees.  If the water gets much cooler, that drum bite will drop out cause those fish will stop eating.  Reports out of Red Drum Tackle in Buxton are that the drum bite has remained steady at the jetties down to the point.  Lately the “Big Biters” have been picking up some of the baits down at the cape, mostly sand tigers and sandbars and a few larger unidentified species that don’t give the bottom rigs back.

Apparently there is a article in todays Virginian Pilot about the local striped bass fishery ( or the lack of  it – I haven’t seen it yet ).  The Nags Head Surf Fishing Club is recruiting new members.  If you’d like to get involved with the oldest surf fishing organization on the OBX, check with Tom at the Stop n Shop.

TAKE A KID FISHING,   Coolbreeze out….
