Fishing Report Feb 24th 2014

For Monday Feb 24th, a little cooler today, expect a high around 48 – 50 degrees, mostly sunny skies with a 0% chance of rain and winds N 10 – 15 mph.  Sunset will be at 5:52 PM and sunrise tomorrow will be 6:40 AM
First tide is high at 2:08 AM with the low at 8:43 AM
Second tide is high at 2:30 PM with the low at 8:52 PM

Last word from Oregon Inlet sounded like the puppy drum action had slowed down on the south side.  The fish weren’t really biting, mostly being snagged and they weren’t all packed in like before.  Water temp at Duck pier is posted at 43 degrees this morning.  A couple days ago Jennettes pier reported they could see the drum in the water but the fish were refusing to bite.

Down south the pups were still hitting grubs and shrimp from the point to ramp 49.  Checking the satellite imagery, the water temp today at the cape and south beaches is in the high 50s to low 60s.  Yesterday between ramps 49 and 55 some anglers were catching a few sea mullet.

A little cooler this week with a slight chance of snow on Wednesday.

Fishing Report Feb 21st 2014

For Friday, Feb 21st, expect a high around 67 degrees, partly cloudy skies with a 60% chance of rain and winds South 15-25 mph.  Sunset is 5:49 PM and sunrise tomorrow will be at 6:43 AM.
First tide is low at 5:32 am with the high at 11:21 AM
Second tide is low at 5:42 PM followed by a high at 12:01 AM tomorrow

The water temp posted at Duck pier this morning was a 39 chilly degrees which is why a lot of the puppy drum caught down at Oregon Inlet are actually snagged and they fight like an old boot.  Some of the satellite imagery for Cape Hatteras shows the water temps getting up to 60+ degrees ( very nice for Feb ).  The Red Drum Tackle team reported good catches of pups on the south side of the point yesterday.

“When God created the earth with 3/4 of the surface water and 1/4 of the surface land, clearly God intended mankind to fish 3 times more than to cut grass.”

Fishing Report Feb 17th 2014

It’s Monday Feb 17th and Duck Research Pier has posted their seawater temperature at 37 degrees today.  Outside the skies are mostly sunny with an expected high around 42, winds will be northerly 15- 20 and there should be a 0% chance of rain.  Sunset will be at 5:45 PM with the sunrise tomorrow at 6:48 AM.
First tide is low at 2:32 AM with the high at 8:33 Am
Second tide is low at 2:54 PM followed with a high at 8:58 PM

Puppy drum are still being landed on the south side of Oregon Inlet but I believe a lot of them are actually being snagged now instead of biting a hook – the water temps are just getting too low up here.  Satellite imagery of the water at cape point indicate water temps in the low 50s, sometimes warmer depending on the winds, and the fish are still taking shrimp or grubtails on leadheads.

Surfing the web earlier I pulled up Rick Caton’s website www.customsoundcharters.com .  Checking his fish reports I opened the entry for 2/2/2014.  Apparently they’re using his son’s boat,  Little Clam, for commercial king mackerel fishing south of Hatteras
( you can see the net reel on the back of the boat ).  Anyway, what is interesting in that photo is the king mackerel and the COBIA that he is holding.  I’ll email him when I get home to see if I can get info on this.

Fishing Report Feb 15th 2014

For Saturday Feb 15th expect a high around 47 degrees, cloudy with an 80% chance of rain and winds light and variable early shifting later to NW 15 – 25.  Sunset today is 5:43 PM and sunrise tomorrow is at 6:50 AM.
First tide is low at 1:18 AM with the high at 7:25 AM
Second tide is low at 1:49 PM followed with the high at 7:46 PM

Yesterday was pretty comfortable weather wise, but sadly, today is a different day.  I heard from a couple folks about puppy drum seen and caught on the south side of Oregon Inlet along with a few cold stunned specks seen in the same area.  Red Drum Tackle reported pups caught at cape point and even around the Buxton jetties.  These drum have been pretty reliable for the middle of winter – just another day in paradise.

Fishing Report Feb 10th 2014

For Monday, Feb 10th, it’s kind of a crappy day.  With only a 20% chance of rain or snow, it probably won’t happen.  With northerly winds at 15 – 25 MPH, today’s 43 degree high will feel a lot cooler than yesterday.  Expect mostly cloudy skies with sunset at 5:38 PM and sunrise tomorrow at 6:55 AM.
First tide is high at 4:16 AM with the low at 10:55 AM
Second tide is high at 4:33 PM and the low at 10:38 PM

The fishing report from Red Drum Tackle in Buxton posted yesterday that the puppy drum were thick around cape point with the action best on the south side.  The usual hot spots at Oregon Inlet had lots of grass and trash in the water making fishing difficult.  Expect the weather conditions to be a bit “iffy” the next few days.

Fishing Report Feb 8th 2014

For Sat, Feb 8th, expect mostly cloudy skies and a 70% chance of rain with NNE winds 15 – 25.  High today around 47 degrees, sunset at 5:36 PM and tomorrow’s sunrise at 6:57 AM.
First tide is high at 2:18 AM with the low at 9:03 AM
Second tide is high at 2:35 PM with the low at 8:48 PM

Duck pier posted their water temp at 41 degrees this morning.  Sat/imagery of the waters around Cape Hatteras early today show surface water temps in the high 40s.
Unfortunately yesterdays Bluefin search was unproductive – they weren’t skunked, but no Bluefin were located.  Was chatting with a marine fisheries agent yesterday and he confirmed there was good fishing for puppy drum on the south side of Oregon Inlet the last several days.  The fishing reports on Red Drum Tackle’s website indicate although there aren’t always a lot of folks fishing, the slot-sized red drum catching is still very good.

Fishing Report Feb 7th 2014

Monday Feb 7th looks to be a fairly nice day.  Was surprised to see we had a dusting of snow last night – I can handle that.  High today in the low 40s, light north winds, mostly sunny with a 0% chance of rain.  Sunset will be at 5:35 PM with sunrise tomorrow around 6:58 AM.
First tide is high at 1:11 AM and a low at 7:54 AM
Second tide is high at 1:27 PM followed by a low at 7:45 PM

A couple boats left the docks today searching for Bluefin tuna – wishing you luck, guys.  I did hear of some puppy  drum landed on the beaches around Oregon Inlet yesterday.  If you haven’t got a driving permit for CHNS, the south side of the inlet would be my choice ( it’s a short stroll to the old coast guard station ).
If you don’t mind the drive and have a park permit, the beaches around cape point are still holding good numbers of puppy drum.

Spring is just around the corner, they say.

!!!!!SPECKLED TROUT SEASON CLOSED!!!!!

Effective  at noon Feb 5th 2014, the recreational and commercial season for speckled trout is closed.  According to NCDMF a recent cold stun event has impacted the N C spotted sea trout population and Marine Fisheries has taken this measure to protect the breeder class of these fish through the spring spawn.  According to the proclamation posted on the NCDMF website it is “the intent of the Fisheries Director to open the spotted seatrout season ….. on June 15, 2014.”  I’m sure there will be more information on this to follow.  Stay tuned.
