Water temps in the surf have come up to 68 – 70 degrees on the northern beaches.  Offshore fleet has been returning to the docks with nice catches of mahi-mahi and some tuna in the boxes also.  The piers and beaches are reporting lots of bluefish and also some spot and sea mullet.

The water is great, get out and enjoy it.  TAKE A KID FISHING!!!

Fishing Report Tues May 20th

It’s Tuesday, expect sunny skies, winds W – NW 10 – 15 MPH and a 0% chance of rain.  Sunset is at 8:04 PM and sunrise tomorrow is 5:53 AM.
First tide is high at 12:08 AM with a low at 6:44 AM
Second tide is high at 12:46 PM with a low at 7:04 PM

Nice day, our weather is in a warming pattern again and the catching is getting better also.  The word from the beaches and piers is that the sea mullet, puffers, spot and blues are starting to cooperate for the anglers – even the occasional puppy drum is taking a hook now and then.  As the wind clocks around to the SW again, expect the large drum to show up at the point, maybe even a few cobia .
In the sounds I’m hearing of some pups and specs and flounder being hooked back in the Colington area – can’t keep the trout yet but it’s still a good sign that they’re there.  At the little bridge I heard of mostly small bottom fish, nothing to get real excited about.

Expect rain off and on most of today, high about 75 degrees with wind SW 15 – 20 MPH.  Sunset is at 8:03 PM and sunrise tomorrow is 5:54 AM.

We knew the nice weather wouldn’t last forever but it was a good run.  Winds will be from the northern quadrants the next few days so that means cooler temps.  Expect a cool down  on catching fish also.  Calling around to the piers today things have been slow.  Good drum bite last night down at Cape Hatteras, just not a lot of people fishing.
Take a break the next several days – it’ll get better again.

Fishing Report Monday May 12th 2014

Nice day out there, mostly sunny, SE winds 5 – 15 MPH, high of 82 degrees, 0% chance of rain, the ocean is calm.  Sunset at 7:58 PM with sunrise tomorrow at 6:00 PM.
First tide is a low at 12:15 AM with a high at 6:04 AM
Second tide is low at 12:13 PM with a high at 6:31 PM

Catching has been very productive the last couple days.  Last night at Cape Hatteras, Red Drum Tackle reports 70 – 80 big drum were caught and released.  Most were hooked on bait, some on metal.  Satellite imagery shows the water temps in the surf on the northern beaches are getting much warmer – Duck Pier shows it at 63 degrees.  There are schools of nice puppy drum working their way north along the beaches.  lots of blues are being caught from the surf and the piers.  If this weather holds, look for some Spanish mackerel to start showing up.
This weather pattern is expected to hold the next couple days.  If you don’t put a line in the water,  you won’t catch anything!

Fishing Report May 9th 2014

Maybe spring has sprung.  Expect a high about 87 degrees, mostly sunny skies w/a 0% chance of rain, with SW winds 10 – 20 MPH. Sunset is around 7:55 PM and sunrise tomorrow at 6:02 AM.
First tide is a low at 3:37 AM with the high at 10:13 PM
Second tide is low at 4:14 PM and  high at 10:28 PM

“One fish, two fish, redfish, BLUEFISH”.  As in lots of bluefish, up and down the beach and from the piers.  Duck Pier posted the water temp at 57 degrees but Avalon reported a toasty 65.  Looking at the satellite imagery, the surf zone looks to be high 50s to low 60s.  Talking with Don at OBX Pier, yesterday, Dave, one of their regulars, caught a 36 inch striped bass.  We  have lots of different lures and tackle in the store to entice stripers but Dave hooked his WITH A SAND FLEA!!!  ARRRRGGHH!!!  Way to go Dave.
According the Red Drum Tackle fishing update, over 50 big drum were beached yesterday/last night at Cape Hatteras.  The weather window looks good for that bite to continue throughout this weekend.  The bad news – there is a closure and you have to hike down to the point.  The good news – it won’t be real crowded.

Fishing Report Tuesday May 6th 2013

Mostly cloudy today w/expected high about 66 degrees and winds NE 10 – 20 mph.  Sunset is 7:53 PM and tomorrow’s sunrise will be at 6:05 AM.
First tide is a high at 12:46 AM and a low at 7:25 AM
Second tide is high at 1:31 PM followed with the low at 7:38 PM

Yesterday when I checked the surf temp at Duck Research Pier it was posted at 50 degrees.  This morning when I looked it was 57 degrees.  Easterly winds make a big difference.  All the piers reported clean water conditions with bluefish being decked today plus a few sea mullet and spot mixed in.  Heard that propeller slough next to Oregon Inlet Fishing center was very productive for puppy drum yesterday.

Fishing Report Monday May 5th 2014

HAPPY CINCO DE MAYO!!!
( as if we needed another reason to drink beer and margaritas around here )

It has only been a month since we’ve had a chance to update our blog/fishing report.  We have been a little under staffed this spring as we’ve been re-stocking the store getting ready for the transition from “slow” to “busy” and the FISH REPORT kind of fell to a lower priority.  The CREW here is gradually being increased so hopefully I will be more diligent about filing fishing updates.  Anyone interested in WORKING at a very busy store, come by and say “hi” and snag an application ( we’re also looking for someone experienced in fishing and tackle sales).

Beach and pier fishing on the northern beaches had an uptick in catching this past weekend with reports of spots, sea mullet, puffers and the occasional bluefish.  There were also several runs of nice slot-sized puppy drum reported from Oregon Inlet and points north.  Cape Hatteras has seen big red drum being landed.

Keep the faith.  TAKE A KID FISHING….   Coolbreeze out
